Everyone who knows me, knows I worship Catherine Baba! When those certain women come into my store, (you know who you are, darlings!) we gather around the computer and watch Catherine Baba videos. Seriously. Screams of "J'adore!" "Darling!" and my favorite: "Faaaaabulous!" pour out in high pitched screams.
She is a styliste ICON, lovey's!
For me, I enjoy how she has branded herself. Her styling work shows her own style, yet somehow it still looks true to the editorial's or client's image.

I first saw a photo of her on the "Sartorialist" and fell in love.I had no inkling of who she was or what she did. I just thought; "I want to look like that!"

A slow, steady stalking insued.

Renee Spina Deardeuff walked into my store a few weeks ago and I nearly chewed off my bakelite bracelets. She had been a visitor at my old store, so I was familiar with her unique style, but on this particular Sunday she blew my fishnet stockings off! Dressed in natty nautical trousers, wide brimmed sun hat (a la Renee Perle!) huge wooden earrings and to die for shoes and sunnies. THIS was one of those customers that you KNOW you are going to fall in love with.
As the day was hectic, I didn't get to interact with her right away. However when she pranced out of the fitting room in MY favorite Tori Richard palazzo jumpsuit I took notice...AGAIN!
We started speaking about different fashionable dames and when she knew who Michelle Harper was, well my heart stopped.
The girls and I quickly fell in love with her infectious laugh, mannerisms and damn spot on fashion sense. When she told us about her alter ego, Marge, we were ready to keep her hostage.

Renee returned that week for a KILLER pair of Prada shoes and I knew...just knew that we would be life long friends.
I had the chance to interview her this past Saturday and it was a blast. (the bottle of red didn't hurt either!) Read on and fall in love with Renee yourself...or with her alter ego: Marge.
Chi-Chi: what is your favorite piece in your collection right now?
Renee: the sassy little number i purchased from here (Her Tori Richard's jumpsuit from Chi-Chi and the Greek.) I love the way it fit, the boldness of the print, the wide palazzo pants and the adorable jacket! It was the first thing I saw when i walked in, and when I went back to it and realised it was palazzo pants I died!!

Chi-Chi: Who are your favorite designers?
Renee: Chanel, Gucci, Dior, Prada.
Chi-Chi: With that said, do you shop vintage for labels or just for the piece?
Renee: I don't care...as long as i love it! if it looks great than I'm in!
Chi-Chi: When did Marge come into the picture?
Renee: late 80's, early 90's. She showed up in a leopard bathing suit and "Marge" hair at a friends pool party. Then she was involved in a bowling league and on Halloween she showed up as ..herself. Then 5 yrs ago i went to a drive in party as Marge. She became more popular than me!! No one asked about me anymore, they just wanted to know if Marge was coming. Sometimes she socializes, other times she passes out hot dogs with a cough and a cigarette. (a FAKE cigarette that Renee fashioned from dryer lint, by the way!)

Chi-Chi: What women do you look upon as style icons?
Renee: My grandmother and my Aunt June. Aunt June stood out, she was loud vocally and in her way of dressing.. I connected very easily to her. She said what she felt and was always put together from hair to bauble! She had and wore an array of Caftan's that she would pair with really great marabou feather slippers or strappy sandals. I loved her really big, bright necklaces and bakelite bracelets too.
Chi-Chi: What kind of music do you listen to?
Renee: Everything from the blues, jazz, Edith Piaf, old school rock and PUNK!

Chi-Chi: favorite beauty products and fragrances?
Renee: Coco,Annick Goutal,Issey Miyake & Kiehl's original musk for fragrances. Beauty products:Natural Crystal Rock(keeps the bees & the flys away...HaHaHa) Loose Face Powder,Eyeliner,Mascara & Blush.
Chi-Chi: Lastly, what are some of your favorite stores?
Renee: Seriously? Well let's see... Off the top of my head...

The sexy, sleek looks of YSL's summer collection literally drive me insane. Can you not imagine the attention you would get walking into a party dressed like that? i can, every day!

i have always loved the movie, Bonnie and Clyde. Most notably for the fashion, the colors, lines...of course the "vintage-ness" of it all.
As a huge advocate of "vintage-slip-as-a-dress-" I particularly adore the screen shoot of Bonnie in a vintage slip and beret. Never mind that she is wearing a sublime A-line wool skirt, I zero in on the vintage slip. One part delicate, innocent, virginal white and the other side knowing, adult and a bit naughty...with the hat still on. The coin necklace is gorgeous as well. A bit of flash with lingerie is always good.
I am a sucker, no doubt, for the silhouette of the 30's. The tight fitting, knitted, baby doll sweaters. Berets, mermaid or tulip type skirts. Spectator shoes, knitted suits, etc etc.
The story of Bonnie and Clyde has lead me to a virtual rabbit hole...most notably stuck on the part Blanche Barrow played.
Why not stay here, at the Joplin Hideout, for a romantic 3 day vacation? it certainly is on my vacation wish list.

step on a crack, break your goddamn bank account

Just finished watching the 12 pt. series of "Cracks" via youtube. I'm sure there was a much easier way to view this 2009 gem, however when I say I am "out of touch with most modern nuances" please believe me.
Anyway, "Cracks" is set in 1934 at an all girls BOARDING SCHOOL, set in some Moorish, (filmed in Ireland) dank, dark, wet place. The diving instructor, Miss G, basically manipulates, lies, enthralls and ruins the lives of her "team."
There's more, much, much more, but you really should watch it. Really.
Whilst the movie is tantalizing, scandalous and somewhat suspenseful, I found the best part was (ta dah) the costumes. Specifically the costumes and BEDROOM of Miss G (played by Eva Green.)
This has lead me to scout out ANY clothing reminiscent of the silhouette so beloved in the thirties.

Our store is that good. better than "that good" in fact. Being "here" is really not a choice. it's just right where we belong.

The Toledo's have been a super obsession of mine for many years. In fact if you have shopped my site or stopped by my store you will notice that I have a Ruben Toledo mannequin for Ralph Pucci. She has a few nicks but is just divine. A treasure worth her weight in gold!

Chloé, keeping me crazed

Chloé, for what we all know and love of the beautiful luxury ready to wear, has kept me dreaming and lurking in her magazine ads for quite some time now. I cannot determine whether it’s the way the clothes are tailored just right giving an amazing girly but oh so sophisticated feel using all the right colors and textures draped in the most dreamy way, or whether it’s the models that get it right every time by their delicate horseback riding character and never appearing to try too hard, but always just happens to be.

Whatever it may be for myself or for you…Chloé has maintained her place in the fashion spotlight since the early fifties. Chloé has had multiple ( and magnificent at that!) designers through the years: Karl Lagerfeld for over a decade, Martine Sitbon, Stella McCartney before launching her own line, McCartneys assistant- Phoebe Philo, Yvan Mispelaere, and NOW.. Hannah MacGibbon! Although it seemed that MacGibbon appeared out of the blue to many, she worked at Valentino for sometime before jumping to Chloé’s team. She was behind scenes at Chloé for five years making her way to designer presenting her 2009 Resort Collection as her first!

And so it is that Hannah has added her spice to the latest collections and for many has caused a wee bit of anxiety for their rankings of the new designer. For what many associate with Chloé, such as all the frills and prints—out the window! And the statement shoes and pronounced bags with much hardware— away with those too! A more tailored fitting, less girly and much more masculine vibe has moved in. I notice a lot of practicality in the latest collections ; from the blouses and dresses all the way down to the shoe. The basic color palettes give a clean and simple look to the eye—but tremendous for layering! And if you ask me, I just cannot marvel over her efforts enough!

While all these bags are from the 1950's and on, each and everyone is in excellent condition.

JT Leroy

Author of “Sarah” and “The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things”, JT Leroy has established quite a name for himself…or should I say many. Jeremiah “Terminator” Leroy is considered as one of the most intelligent and creative crackerjacks in performing a scandalous hoax, in my book.

And so the story goes: Leroy was a drug addicted teenager who prostituted himself at truck stops before his years of writing. Then fleeing to San Francisco, Leroy turned his stories into work making him a successful writer. But what is most unusual is Leroy had started working with his agents and editors about 5 years before the publication of “Sarah” in 2001 and nobody had ever met Leroy in person. All interviews and discussions were through telephone, email, or fax. Leroy was suspiciously avoiding all means of contact...And it wasn’t until after his publication of “Sarah” that Leroy started making public appearances; distinguished by a bright blonde wig and killer sunglasses. Immediately people started drawing suspicions of Leroy and if that was really him behind the glasses. Not a single record of a JT Leroy or existing family member could be found, not a single road where he supposedly spent his childhood, or a townsman familiar with his name. And when he was questioned, he used his corrupted childhood as an explanation behind the cross-dressing and blonde wigs, as well as his delicate voice on the phone. Every possible twist leading to Leroy was not found... Although it wasn’t until 2005 that the real Jeremiah “Terminator” Leroy was discovered!

In an interview, Geoffrey Knoop admitted that the person behind JT Leroy was Laura Albert. Geoffrey Knoop and Laura Albert were the supposed parents that rescued Leroy as a corrupted teenager. The real deal was Knoop and Albert were not only lovers but the brains behind this all clever hoax. Knoops half sister, Savannah Knoop, was the face of all public appearances as Leroy! And it wasn’t until the couple split that Geoffrey Knoop let the cat out of the bag and Laura Albert was of course charged with fraud. But what it most amazing is not only she twisted everyone’s minds at a flawless level, but she managed to do it for a whopping 10 years! Best believe it!

After the JT Leroy hoax fell apart, years later a fragrance called ‘Trompeur’ by perfumer Yosh Han came about. Before JT Leroy was uncovered, he had contacted Yosh to pair up and create a fragrance of earthy, yet sexual scents to go along with his new book, “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things”, as that would be the new fragrance name. Only months later, the scandal was released and lawsuits started storming. Yosh quickly dropped her support from the new fragrance. So then the perfume ‘Trompeur’ hit markets not long after. And you ask what does Trompeur mean exactly? French for betrayer, misleading, deceiver (I think it suits just right!) Yosh had revamped the Leroy created perfume under her own brand after some feelings of betrayal. Of course Yosh wont admittingly tell that this fragrance portraits Leroy, but only her biggest fans could put one and one together.

Who is..Olya Thompson

Olya Thompson .OLYA THOMPSON a magnificent textile designer. BUT not just another textile designer blending in the crowd. She is a one of a king gem I tell you; brilliant in her work, true to her ethnic history, and impeccable to design.

Moving from Russia to the States in her teen years, she still carries with her a strong remembrance and appreciance for her homeland which is clearly visible in her well being as well as inspiration in her designs. And best part yet, it wasn’t until she was remodeling her house in New York with her husband (and photographer) Charles, that she discovered the lack of textiles and fabrics she was in search for. Leaving her unsatisfied, she took things to her own matters and made a textile designer of herself. Genius gal. Recently opening her fabric house with partner Nathalie Farman-Farma, ‘Tissus Tartares’.

Her taste sure is nothing but exquisite--Rich. Delicate. Plentiful but not over-bearing. Romantic. Subtle yet colorful. Ethnic and PROUD!

And if you can’t quite grasp her taste. Please take a bite of her New York residence as you will see her use of patterns and textures. AMAZING ,enough said.

J-Crew Revamped..OR perhaps not?

Recently it was brought to my attention that J-Crew had something for all of us to see.What you ask, what could J-crew possibly have in store for us (no hard feelings, by any means here) but when I think J-crew, the first images running through this head of mine is simple basic garments, garments that are affordable, and the garments that are staples in our wardrobe. Because of this, J-Crew has long established themselves and is a serving loyal friend in the average household closet. So when I first heard J-Crew had something to ring my ears, I was thrown though a minor loop. Now with that said, HERE, here I show you the fall 2010 ready to wear collection styled by the creative Jenna Lyons. Her inspiration--"Grey Gardens".

Now I ask you:
Is this Jcrew totally revamped? With new designs, silhouette structure and use of textiles..
OR
Is this still the same simple J-Crew we know? ..Paired up with a genius stylist.

I leave this up to you, ladies and gentlemen, for you to decide. Can a brilliantly artistic stylist be the one responsible for the presentation of J-Crews fall collection. Or, is it the designer revamping the line in total..?

sometimes i wonder...where the hell have i been? charles anastase is the french designer that has been setting the fashion world on fire. he recently came to my radar and of course i am obsessed!as a stylist i am quite a control freak. also a lover of layers and small details, like a color story...bold jewelry and quirky offbeat pieces. anastase is my new idol. partly because his attention is in the details...sometimes the lack of. anastase is a stickler for details and styling of his collection and it shows. the hair, make up, shoes and stockings are perfect without looking overly styled.
the fall 2010 collection had mr drooling for those pink/french nude opaque hose. the white glasses? fresh! big hair and wine colored lips? divine.

I have always been a weeee bit obsessed with Rachel Feinstein's style. Slightly retro, slightly quirky, but ALWAYS well thought out.

i worship at her alter....
and so does Araks Yeramyan. Apparently her latest collection is inspired in part by Ms. Feinstein.
The hair, the lips, the "quirk factor." Araks does the whole retro nerd look to perfection!

By now, you may have guessed that i adore the whole: "pajama pant as pants" look. But this...this SCREAMS "new" to me. Silk, pajama shorts! Think vintage tap pants...or cut those VS silk bottoms you have! of course the curious stripe sweater is mandatory!

So current, so totally do-able!
Shiseido did the make up for Araks show. I actually think the "no-mascara-no-liner and matte-sheer-lipstick" look is the ONLY look for the next year.
I am particurally fond of Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte in Coral Glow, but the other colors can work as well.

last night I read this passage:

On a field trip to LA’s Frog Town one Saturday afternoon, I had the opportunity to meet architect, artist and inventor Eddy Sykes who took a moment to tell me more about himself and his creation. In person, the YakuzaLou is sharp, futuristic and the Rorschach inkblots cut into brass makes for an imaginative pattern. Watching the robotic fixture bloom into what looks like a delicate, steel snowflake brought back a flash of wide eyed childhood wonder. A break away from the inanimate chandelier, Eddy brings new light with his kinetic YakuzaLou.

You began as an architect, did you construct any buildings?

I started off breaking the first cardinal rule of young architects, designing a home for your parents! It was…educational. In a way it was very revealing, design trends that we were interested in as students were simply not going to fly with people who knew me in diapers, so most of my grandiose ideas were shot down with the sensitivity of a falling piano (Thank god!). The house got built but I switched it up to smaller scale soon thereafter.

Tell me about your journey to YakuzaLou.

The approach is being conscious of the end piece at every step in its evolution- Knowing what you want to piece to communicate and being able to keep that at the forefront as you are doing the more specific engineering development. It is very easy to find yourself celebrating the theater of movement and forgetting about what the original idea was/is. Obviously working with kinetics has quite a few trap doors; the most ominous is letting the kinetics do all the talking. That is not to say that you should spend less time working on the engineering on the contrary, you have to make sure that it will function flawlessly and that can be a herculean task. You just have to make sure that when you are satisfied with that particular engineering development, the larger ideas are also satisfied.

You mentioned the name was inspired by your daughter. Do you find other inspiration outside the design world?
Well the yakuza was/is a silent, strong, influential force that you simply cannot say ‘no’ to – that pretty much sums up my daughter. I really try to stay away from design, art, and architecture information completely, at least the magazines.

I am more interested in what an 80-year-old watchmaker has in an old shoe box under his workbench. Quite a bit of small quick compositions have to be made by hand by machinist’s or watch makers that enable them to make other parts. This act of making objects to facilitate the making of other objects is fascinating to me, and in some ways so mysterious it’s almost frightening.

So process would be the inspiration?

Definitely in the mix. I can honestly say I’m a process nerd. Everything is inspirational; it’s all about how you handle the execution of that information. Let’s say for example, you are exploring the relationship between personal watercraft and gypsy caravans, would your vision be better served using a #2 double cut file or a #000 bastard cut file… I’m being kind of provocative here, but that’s what I am interested in. There is a rational behind that choice, even if you don’t know what I’m talking about, you can appreciate a golfer who picks a club that you would never expect and plays the shot perfectly. That entire round was a piece and the club was just one note. Process for me is kind of like that.

Where would you envision the YakuzaLou displayed?

When I say everywhere, I actually mean everywhere. Expandable surface articulation is something that is very comfortable living in a five star hotel as a glass canopy or orbiting the planet as a radio satellite. Sky’s the limit.

Do you ever use salvaged material in your work?

For studies, or one offs, for sure. I will always be attracted to old junk, it goes with the territory.

Is it more interesting to you to change the identity of a material or use it organically?

In some cases it’s both. It turns out that old bowling balls are made of a very workable material that carves better then you would expect. You know what it is after you carve a potted house plant out of it- it’s a jet black sculpture of a small potted plant-. And you are now in a position to either disclose the source material or keep it a secret-if its part of the work or not. It’s different for each piece.

What materials do you enjoy using the most?

The materials that put up the least amount of resistance.

What project/piece was the most fun for you? Why?

Even though my work may be somewhat delicate, I have had some great opportunity’s to work big. The scale of architecture still gets me excited, the complexity of large-scale work is very intense and you either love that bee hive or you don’t. I really think the best projects for me were the biggest ones.

Do you have hobbies outside of design?

I’ve restored a few old Alfa Romeos. That is a passion of mine that I have to be responsible with. I see my studio output decline substantially whenever I come across an old basket case Alfa, so I try not to tackle two money losing ventures simultaneously.

Are there any architects or designers who influence your work?

I had an opportunity to work with Ric Scofidio in the past – how could you not love that drill piece, and how about that Blur Building! He’s also a big car guy so I guess I have had the luxury of working with someone who I respected and actually liked.

What era in design is your favorite? (region, country)

Often i look for stylish women of my own age to gather inspiration. Yet, i notice that here, in Michigan, there seems to be a style "uniform" that is a bit...well, bland. On a recent mall trip with my family (I know, I know, "the mall?" it was NOT a good day!) I pointed out to my children that every woman over the age of 40 looked exactly-the-same! (so did every woman under the age of 40, but that's another post!)
Same flared jeans, same leather blazer, same wedge boots, same nondescript large leather bag, same highlights. it was like watching a loop of the same person walking back and forth.
Distressing? YES! Scary? Definitely. Only in the sense that individualism has left the building for most women.
Imagine, yes sit back and just IMAGINE, my delight in seeing Beatrix Ost on Style Like U blog!!

A month ago I styled a photo shoot that was themed "vintage." I had to find a location, pretty much the day of. The Greek came up with this amazing spot, part motel part small efficiency houses. It was sketchy at best, but the manager was very accommodating and super cool. (and had an endless supply of Kool mild's as well as PBR!!)
My main concern, besides the bright lights, stressed out spats and general commotion we caused was that the locals wouldn't find our fashion too interesting. Lets face it; in an age of low cut tops, tight jeans, spanks as pants...vintage dresses aren't what most would call sexy or hot, right?

WRONG!!!!!!!! These people went gaga over the models clothing. Same thing at my store, more men come in, because of my window displays, wishing their women would dress up in such finery, vintage lingerie, gloves, hats. Its truly quite amazing! Men have a very fine appreciation for lady like fashion.

Just look at Mad men. Those girdles and bra sets drive most men I know insane.

It translate to fragrance too. More often than not, I hear "Chanel No. 5" as the favorite scent of hot blooded men. I have it, wear it, love it, but frankly it's my "professional, take me serious scent" the go to scent for weddings, funerals, interviews..non invasive its the no brainer choice when I am not in a familiar element. I never think of it as a sexy, come hither scent, but I am obviously mistaken. Marilyn Monroe, famously answered that the only thing she wore to bed was "Chanel No. 5" A lesson to be learned!

Lets go back to vintage lingerie! Dita von Teese, clearly understands what men love. Yes her shows are more over the top, but look at her in her everyday wear. Don't you wonder what she is wearing underneath? I'm betting its not a thong!

and anyone who knows me, knows that i definitely love wearing lingerie as clothing! Okay, perhaps NOT when I pick my children up from catholic school, but certainly when the Greek and I go out!

They point is not to take it so literally. Of course wearing a sheer slip and garters and a bra peeking out is way much. But donning a vintage slip as a skirt is quite beautiful!

Great Depression Fashion

It's no secret that I am in love with the fashion from the 1920's and 30's. Not only the glamorous imagery from the movies and socialites, but what the actual "person in the street" was wearing. Drop waisted dresses, jaunty cloches, over sized tweed coats with fur collars, knee socks and Mary Jane's; all these things are considered "regular attire" to me.

Even the men's clothes I covet!! Their rolled jeans, oxfords, workman boots, overalls,newspaper boy caps...I wear it all! Its not uncommon that people remark I was born in the wrong era!!!

The whole thought of the Great Depression is magical to me, it always has been. Growing up I heard frequent stories from my Grandfather Rudy and grandmother, Virgie, about their lives during that era. Perhaps it was more magical hearing about it rather than living it but they always sounded like they were having so much fun, everyone was in the same boat so it wasn't as if they were alone in their struggles.
Often I find myself comparing today's economy and times to the Great depression. Everyone is going through similar hardships, fears and tough times. I figure if my grandparents muscled through it with 8 children and one working adult than we can certainly breeze through these times with only 2 children!

I know I am not alone in my comparisons. Just recently i read about the New York store: "the 1929." The 1929 is an upscale boutique that cuts out the middle man to sell top fashion at market depreciated prices. the concept isn't new, but the reference to the great depression and where we are at now in our economy is brilliant. According to the NY Daily News, they have a "soup kitchen" in the basement too!

Ralph Lauren's spring 2010 collection has that same vibe. The Great Depression fashion! I love it, love it, love it!!!!!!!!!! Totally do-able!
Ripped overalls? oh hell yaeh! Just add a silk top, jeweled heels and a couple of rhinestone bracelets...or a velvet blazer and that old pashmina from a few years back.

I love this suspender with cinched, leather belt, waist look!

Vintage jean jacket coupled with floral 30's vintage jacket and wedges? J'adore!

Socks and oxfords with a sweet floral suit? The bee's knees!!!!!

Hectic times, just finished a 48 hr film competition....redoing website and getting used to the summer.

I first saw her in an editorial featuring Christian Lacroix, she was wearing wide legged trousers (WHITE) a nautical, blue and white, stripe top, red espadrilles and red lipstick. i believe she was still married at the time and while she had a more rounded youthful look, she stood out in the sea of fashionista's, looking very chic, glamorous and yet as if she just threw everything on quickly. Unbelievable shoot with Chip Willis this week. Nettie, the model, was sweet and beautiful. Sophia did some damn amazing hair and make up...I can't wait to see the final results.
I was able to meet with Chip and Nettie the next day and realized that Nettie has something special behind those penetrating eyes.

Possibly one of my favorite collections right now. Lanvin, Resort 2009. Bright colors and a higgedly piggedly array of baubles and styling...so wrong it's right...my first thought. Second thought: Grey Gardens is still a vital influence in fashion!!!!!

Ahhhh, so right, indeed.
Who doesn't have a long summer dress in almost painfully bright colors? They always lose their appeal after a couple of wears. But now by adding pearls, brooches and some creative draping (ie: pinning and rolling those hems)they can be fresh again. Don't forget the rolled out of bed up-do (add your pins and treasures to it as well!) piles of chains, belts, large eighties-esque earrings,"dressy heels" and a touch of blush. Perfect for the Hamptons!

huge fan of Demeulemeester's draping, layering and choice of accessories for Spring 2009. While I loved the women's collection, I could see myself sporting the men's wear even more. Silk, narrow trousers, white shoes, (dare I say: Saddle shoes?..that's my choice!)stripes and polka dots mixed.
Love!
The layered, long T's are gorgeous with their Kimono type drape and ties. Again, a collection/look that is easily adapted (read: copied for less!) with few additions to your wardrobe.
I'm betting that it is quite easy to replicate the lines and feel of this collection.

I'm a wee bit obsessed with 80's gold jewelry as of late. Large Anne Klein earrings, cloisonne pendants, large gold necklaces....I can't get enough! I recently purchased the "Tamar" necklace from Esther K. I wear it almost daily, layered with other golden baubles.

Found and purchased this cicada necklace from etsy dealer: Chain Chain Chained, she's from Detroit! You know how I DIG cicadas!!!! I'm thinking it will look fab. with the Tamar necklace.
